Description from the seller
Nicholas Icon on Wooden Panel, Eastern Orthodox Tradition, circa 1930
Eastern Europe, circa 1930.
Hand-painted tempera with gilded background on solid wooden panel. Traditional Orthodox depiction of Saint Nicholas holding the Gospel and giving a blessing gesture.
Executed in accordance with established iconographic canon, including frontal composition, hieratic posture, and linear facial highlights characteristic of early 20th-century devotional workshop production. The surface presents natural craquelure across the gilded ground and painted layers, consistent with age and traditional materials. Minor surface wear visible. Structurally stable. Original wooden support and metal hanging mount preserved.
The work reflects continuity of late Byzantine and Russian Orthodox painting traditions during the interwar period, when devotional icons were still produced for ecclesiastical and private use. The preserved patina and coherent surface aging support authenticity and period consistency.
Dimensions: 24.5 × 17 × 2 cm.
