Description from the seller
Crucified Jesus Christ bust with a crown of thorns in terracotta, displaying the dramatic expressive quality typical of certain historical periods. The work depicts Christ with his head tilted upward at the very moment of the Passion, as he gazes toward heaven and turns to the merciful Father. A work of fine craftsmanship with attention to anatomical details and compositional coherence, coming from ecclesiastical surroundings, probably adorned a small domestic or escritoire altar.
The lower section features a shield with the Christian monogram "IHS" and floral decorations; on the sides is depicted an angel, and on the opposite side the winged death, symbolizing the transience of earthly life in contrast to divine life. On the rest of the base, there is a cross, symbol of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. The Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, in Latin: Ordo Equestris Sancti Sepulcri Hierosolymitani, is a Catholic chivalric order.
The cross of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre is the potent cross (or Jerusalem cross), formed by a central cross with four smaller crosses at the ends of the arms, symbolizing the five wounds of Christ.
The iconography suggests the original presence of a wooden base, now missing.
The work will be shipped with proper packaging.
