AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Unique piece: a very beautiful necklace consisting of a pendant and a large cable chain of flat links, 49 cm long. Total weight 38 g (25 g for the chain and 13 g for the pendant).

The pendant is made from a so-called provincial Roman coin struck by local authorities in a province of the Roman Empire, in this case Syria. This coin, dating from the late 2nd century or the early 3rd century AD, depicts on the obverse the radiate head of Caracalla, then consul in the East and holder of the tribunician power. The future emperor is shown in right profile, wearing the famous radiate crown attached to the neck by a ribbon whose knot and trailing ends are clearly distinct.

The reverse features a goddess standing, clad in a long tunic draped over a slender body, the left arm supporting a large horn of plenty, the left hand holding what appears to be a sprig of flowers. It could be the goddess of luck (Fortuna) venerated by Caracalla or, less likely, Ceres, goddess of abundance and harvests.

The photos, where the relief of the engravings on both faces is somewhat flattened, do not do justice to the beauty of the piece, whose finesse of strike and details appear beneath the beautiful uniform green patina. It is much more beautiful in reality than in the photo, in particular the portrait of Caracalla is very successful, showing a young man with a virile and energetic profile that is easily recognizable and quite distant from the later representations of the same man as a cruel, murderous emperor, and, according to historians of the time, rather unstable.

This is a bespoke jewel made by a jeweler-artist with an authentic coin, a family heirloom. The suspension ring sculpted in large dimensions that seems to extend the crown is to be admired. The chain is equipped with a robust clasp stamped with the silver hallmark (925) and various atelier marks.

It can be worn for both women and men, alone or paired with its pendant or any other pendant, its classicism and fine craftsmanship allowing these variations.

A unique piece of jewelry, destined for people who enjoy wearing extraordinary but authentic and good-taste adornments.
