Description from the seller
Statue in very good condition. Some small flaking on the left side of the mantle, and some abrasions at the back, on the base near the name. Small opening at the back near the neck, possibly for attaching a halo or for fall protection mounting. Plaster with light yellow polychromy.
Made by Gerard Hack (1893–1975), a well-known religious sculptor and designer, then based in Maastricht. Gerard (Orval) Hack was known for his Art Deco style and his ability to capture the atmosphere and expression of his subjects. He mainly created religious art for churches and Roman Catholic organizations, including various statues of Jesus and Mary. His works are often signed, sometimes as G. Hack Rutten, Maastricht, after his marriage in 1922. His sculptures, such as this Madonna with Child, are characterized by a sleek Art Deco style.
It is a statue of Mary with a veil, devoutly looking downward, holding the child Jesus in her arms and hands.
Jesus depicted with a halo, and a globe with a cross in his left hand, the symbol by which Christ’s dominion over the world has been represented since the Middle Ages. His right hand in a blessing gesture.
On the base, left side, signature Gerard Hack.
On the base, back, PROPERTY OF G.H.R.M. (Gerard Hack Rutten, Maastricht)
