Description from the seller
Oil on canvas depicting a rural landscape and signed
Leo Piron (1899-1962)
Léo Piron (1899-1962) was a renowned Belgian landscape painter, associated with the Laethem-Saint-Martin School. His work is today preserved and enhanced by the Leo Piron Fund within the King Baudouin Foundation.
Key points of his life and work:
Style and themes: He is famous for his snowy landscapes and views of the Flemish countryside, particularly around Nukerke and Etikhove. His style is characterized by a melancholic atmosphere, often compared to that of his father-in-law.
Training and influences: He studied at the Aalst academies. He was the son-in-law of the famous painter Valerius de Saedeleer, with whom he shared a strong artistic affinity.
Recognition: Long kept in the shadow of his father-in-law, he is now regarded as a leading artist with his own personality, often described as a “fragile dandy.”
