Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) - Euskaltzaindia, 1980

Eduardo Chillida. Euskaltzaindia, 1980. Eduardo Chillida is one of the key figures of 20th-century European art. Internationally recognized for his exploration of space, matter, and void, his work spans sculpture, drawing, and printmaking, investigating the tensions between form, balance, and architecture. Throughout his career, his visual language evolved toward a radical synthesis in which minimal gestures acquire powerful structural presence. Sheet dimensions: 36 x 26 cm. Image dimensions: 18 x 11.2 cm (same size as the original drawing). Total dimensions: approx. 41 x 31 cm. Limited edition from the Chillida Leku Museum. Five-ink print on River Artist natural white paper, 120 gr. Mounted on grey support with removable presentation points. Excellent condition. In Euskaltzaindia (1980), Chillida builds the composition from a dark horizontal band crossed by a fragmented central form that seems to emerge from the void. The combination of collage and ink creates an almost architectural structure in which the shapes do not describe an object but a relationship of forces. The light space becomes an active element, defining the rhythm and balance of the work. The title refers to the Royal Academy of the Basque Language, an institution dedicated to the preservation and study of Euskera, reflecting Chillida’s deep connection with Basque culture and thought. As in many of his works, the reference is not illustrative but conceptual: form becomes a symbol of identity, memory, and collective construction. The work functions as a synthesis between drawing, sculpture, and visual architecture, where the void has the same importance as matter. This principle, constant throughout Chillida’s production, is what places his work among the most influential in contemporary art.
