2003 Noon Winery, Eclipse - South Australia - 5 Bottles (0.75L)

Noon Winery is a boutique wine producer located in McLaren Vale in South Australia. It is known for its red wines – full bodied expressions of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that all tend to sell out quickly. The winery was founded in 1976 by David Noon, who until then had mostly sold the fruit from his 4 hectare (10 acre) property to other producers. A strong desire to make his own wine saw him begin to make a small amount each vintage, until his son Drew took over as full time winemaker in 1996. There are three estate owned vineyard sites in McLaren Vale, including the 2.4 hectare Winery Block. This vineyard contains old bush vine Grenache planted in 1934. It supplies the Eclipse bottling, which typically features 80 percent of the variety. The 1.6ha BJ's Block was established in 1943. It supplies Grenache for Eclipse and the High Noon Rosé (the latter is not currently exported). The newest property, the 1.6ha Almond Block, was planted in 1999. The Noons grow Graciano and Shiraz here for Eclipse. Noon's McLaren Vale plots feature sandy loam topsoils over cool red clays. The clay provides moisture to the vines throughout McLaren Vale's extremely hot summers. This allows the vines to be farmed without irrigation, though yields can be very low after a dry winter. The Noons also source grapes from two equally small blocks of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in the Langhorne Creek, 50 minutes to the south of McLaren Vale. The vineyards were respectively planted in the early 1960s and early 1970s, and are owned by the Borrett family. They supply the Reserve Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. As well as the wines mentioned above, the Noons occasionally release fortified wines. The single vintage VP has around 18 months aging in barrel before release and suits further bottle aging. The Tawny is a blend of older vintages, averaging 15 years. Noon also have a second label, Twelve Bells. However at the time of writing this is not available outside Australia.
