Description from the seller

Pipa Chacom Verlaine – Hand Cut – Shape 873
Brand history
The Chacom brand is one of the most historic producers of French pipes. It was founded in 1825 in the village of Saint-Claude, in the Jura, considered the world capital of the pipe.

The name Chacom derives from the fusion of the surnames of the founding families:

Henri Comoy
Chapuis

During the 20th century the manufacture became one of the most important in Europe, producing both industrial-quality pipes and semi-handcrafted and handcrafted lines.

Verlaine Series
The Verlaine series is a line of elegant pipes dedicated to the French poet Paul Verlaine.

Main characteristics of the series:

selected cross grain burl with beautiful flame
glossy reddish-brown finish
shiny black vulcanite mouthpiece
CC mark on the mouthpiece (Chacom logo)
careful workmanship with a well-calibrated bore

The inscription HAND CUT indicates that the mouthpiece has been finished by hand, a typical feature of Chacom’s mid-to-upper-range lines.

Characteristics of the shown pipe
Model: Verlaine
Shape: 873
Shape type: Bent Billiard / Bent French Classic Apple
Material: Mediterranean heath burl
Mouthpiece: vulcanite with CC logo
Origin: France – Saint-Claude

The grain of the briar shows cross grain and birdseye, a sign of a block of good quality.

Estimated dating
This type of marking and the CC logo on the mouthpiece are typical of productions:

1970s – early 1990s
Period in which Chacom produced many series dedicated to French literature.
