Four Faïence plates from France by Faïence de Moustiers, dating to the 1950s–1960s, with diameters of 24 cm and 26 cm, featuring two grotesque designs and two Provençal life-scene motifs, with pierced borders, two hand-signed on the back, in good used condition with minor aging traces.
Description from the seller
Magnificent set of 4 plates made in the 1950s-60s by the famous Moustiers-Sainte-Marie faience workshop in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (France).
The decor of "Grotesques" (for the first 2 plates): This style, popularized in the 18th century, is characterized by fantastic creatures, stylized animals (such as the unicorn on the left and the exotic bird on the right) and light botanical elements.
Regarding the other 2 plates, the design of the figures is very close to the style of modern Provençal santons. This type of decor "living scene", though inspired by ancient themes, enjoyed enormous success in Provençal workshops after World War II, driven by the revival of folklore and tourism in Provence.
The pierced borders: The cutwork around the rim (small diamonds and large openings) is called "pierced border" or "openwork". It is a delicate technique that demonstrates a certain artisanal know-how.
The color palette: You can find the classic colors of Provençal faience: ochre yellow, cobalt blue, copper green, and touches of manganese (purple/brown).
Diameters: 24 cm and 26 cm respectively for the two lots of plates. With metal hooks on the back for wall mounting. 2 of the 4 plates, handmade, are signed by hand on the back.
In good overall condition. See photos, they are part of the description.
