1. IDENTIFICATION
Interesting and refined trompe-l’oeil of a kitchen or pantry, centered on a small grouping of garlic, onions and bulbs arranged on a dark wooden background of rich texture.
The work is clearly attributed to Cristóbal Olmedo (1957), an author who demonstrates here a singular sensitivity to ennoble a humble motif through a sober, silent, and extraordinarily decorative language. The composition, in an unusually tall vertical format, concentrates attention on the central motif and makes the whole piece have a strong visual personality.
This is a very attractive work within the tradition of contemporary illusionistic still life, where the everyday object becomes an autonomous pictorial presence.
2. ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION
The composition is structured on a large surface of faux wood, treated with a range of deep browns, toasted glazes, and dark transparencies that generate a warm, intimate, enveloping atmosphere.
In the center emerges a delicate grouping of garlic and onions, resolved with great finesse in the nuances of off-whites, pale pinks, soft earth tones, and nacreous grays. The bulbs appear modeled with almost tactile care, while the extremely fine roots and organic lines contribute veracity, lightness, and a pronounced naturalist charm.
The work stands out especially for the contrast between the humility of the subject and the nobility of its treatment. That balance between compositional austerity, chromatic sensitivity, and material delicacy gives the whole ensemble a silent elegance that is highly effective from a decorative standpoint.
3. ARTISTIC CONTEXT AND AUTHOR
Cristóbal Olmedo situates himself in a line of painting that inherits still life and trompe-l’oeil, updating them from a contemporary but tradition-respecting perspective. In this work, the artist does not seek narrative excess, but formal concentration, the poetic value of the object, and the ability of the support to suggest time, matter, and memory.
The piece dialogues with the tradition of Spanish and European still life, especially with those compositions that turn simple kitchen or pantry objects into absolute protagonists of the painting. However, here the treatment already feels modern in its refinement, in its extreme verticality, and in the prominence given to the surrounding emptiness.
The red signature, arranged vertically, acts not only as an authenticity element but also as a plastic resource integrated into the composition.
4. CONDITION
The work presents an excellent visual presence and a very clean reading. The pictorial surface preserves strength, atmosphere, and material quality, while the support offers a solid and highly attractive image.
The piece maintains all its decorative force and visual intensity. The reverse and mounting structure are consistent with a panel-based work of this nature.
5. GUARANTEE AND TRANSPARENCY
Offered as a work by Cristóbal Olmedo (1957), oil on panel, signed, in an honest and professional manner.
The attribution rests on the already confirmed identification of the author, as well as the presence of the signature. In this wording, there is no excessive interpretation, maintaining a clear, solid, and commercially effective cataloging.
The exact measurements of width and total dimensions can be adjusted precisely once you confirm, to complete the file.
6. COLLECTOR’S OPPORTUNITY
A very attractive piece for collectors of contemporary still life, trompe-l’oeil, quality decorative painting, and small-to-medium format works with great personality.
Its interest lies in the strength of the vertical format, the nobility of the background, the delicacy of the motif, and the artist’s ability to transform humble elements into an elegant, cultured, and highly decorative image.
It is a work that functions especially well in refined interiors, characterful kitchens, dining rooms, offices, or spaces where silent, sober, intimate-reading painting is valued.
