Description from the seller
Stylized Buddha
Laos, 19th century
Wood
Dimensions: height 15.5 cm
Rare small wooden sculpture depicting a Buddha seated in meditation, resting on a conical base carved from a single block. The whole is distinguished by an extreme stylization of forms, almost abstract. Barely sketched face, clean volumes, taut lines and absence of superfluous details.
This radical simplification gives the piece an unexpectedly modern presence, reminiscent in some respects of 20th-century minimalist sculpture. The frontal treatment, the geometrization of the base, and the economy of means bring this work close to a decidedly contemporary aesthetic, despite its age.
The Buddha is portrayed in a classic meditative posture, but interpreted here with great formal freedom, typical of certain rural votive productions from Laos. The surface, deliberately left rough, reveals tool marks and a deep patina, reinforcing the sculptural and authentic character of the whole.
Condition: erosion at the top of the head. Old patina. Overall in good condition.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
