An Italian 800-silver scroll bookmark dating to 1970–1980, weighing 5.6 g, 9.6 cm high and 1.5 cm wide, in fair condition, by Graduation Scroll Bookmark 800 Silver.
Description from the seller
This is a scroll-shaped commemorative bookmark handcrafted by an Italian silversmith.
Purity Mark: The 800 mark is clearly visible on the top clasp, representing standard 800 sterling silver (80% silver content). This is the most classic purity standard for Italian silverware, distinct from the American 925 silver.
Craftsman's Mark: The back of the scroll has an oval UNI or similar workshop mark (similar to the abbreviation of the Italian Silversmiths' Association or a specific workshop).
Weight: 5.60g, solidly made, entirely cast in solid silver, not hollow and plated.
Inscription: The scroll is engraved with LAUREA (Italian for degree or graduation), a symbolic graduation blessing in Italian culture.
The main body is long and pointed, a typical Italian "Lausanne" or academic commemorative style.
The top is elaborately decorated with feathers, scrolls, and bows; the feathers symbolize wisdom and academic achievement, and the scroll symbolizes knowledge and documents.
Cultural Background: In Italian tradition, "Laurea" refers to a university diploma. These silver ornaments are often given as graduation gifts to students about to complete their studies, symbolizing a bright future and lasting wisdom.
Craftsmanship: Cast using the lost-wax method, the relief patterns (feathers, scrolls) are clear and three-dimensional, and the edges have been given an antique finish (oxidized black) to highlight the details and create a sense of depth. It is a typical example of Italian vintage silver ornaments (Florence style).
The overall condition is naturally patinaed, with signs of use, but it is in good condition.
