The heliogravure was printed and published in 1923 by Jan Mankes's wife A. Mankes-Zernike and R.N. Roland Holst.

Jan Mankes entered art history as "Holland's most serene painter." He produced about 200 paintings, 100 drawings and 50 prints before his death at the age of 30 from tuberculosis. His restrained, detailed work ranged from self-portraits to landscapes and studies of birds and animals. His work is now exhibited in his homeland, the Netherlands, at Museum Arnhem, Museum Belvédère and Museum MORE.
