Leo Setz

Prachtig werk van jhr. Robert Archibald Antonius Joan (Rob) Graafland (Maastricht, 26 november 1875 – Heerlen, 28 april 1940), een Nederlandse kunstschilder. Het schilderij is recent professioneel schoongemaakt en ingelijst in een exclusieve Gehring-lijst. Bij het werk wordt bovendien een boek geleverd ter waarde van €200.

Het werk dateert uit het begin van de 20e eeuw en is opgezet met een losse, impressionistische toets. Tegelijkertijd heeft het een dromerige uitstraling, zichtbaar in de verfijnde uitwerking van onder andere het gezicht, een kenmerkende werkwijze uit Graaflands glorietijd. 

Graafland volgde zijn opleiding in Amsterdam en ontwikkelde zich tot een romantisch impressionist, bekend om zijn warme kleuren en levendige schilderijen. Na zijn studie keerde hij terug naar Maastricht, waar hij als docent actief was en een belangrijke rol speelde in het regionale kunstklimaat, onder meer via de Limburgse Kunstkring. In 1911 vestigde hij zich in Sint Pieter, waar hij samenwerkte met andere kunstenaars en onder invloed van luministen zijn stijl verder verfijnde. Na persoonlijke en financiële tegenslagen, waaronder een depressie na de Eerste Wereldoorlog, stopte hij tijdelijk met schilderen en vernietigde hij een deel van zijn vroege werk. Later hervatte hij zijn kunstenaarschap, met een nadruk op portretten en dromerige, vaak vrouwelijke figuren. Naast zijn werk als schilder was hij actief als illustrator en docent. Zijn laatste levensjaren bracht hij door in onder meer Den Haag en Vught, waarna hij in Heerlen overleed.
