Small wooden Buddha statuette carved, lacquered and gilded, seated in meditation with bhūmisparśa mudrā, 13 cm high, 6 cm wide and 3.5 cm deep, Laos, provenance Kanaka The Collection, with certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
Buddha
Ethnic work
19th century, Laos
Wood
13 cm height
Small statuette of Buddha in carved wood, lacquered and gilded, depicted seated in meditation on a rectangular base. Despite its small size, it has a very strong presence thanks to its compact silhouette and its interiorized expression.
The Buddha is depicted in the bhūmisparśa mudrā gesture.
The right hand descends toward the earth while the left rests in the lap, palm facing upward. This gesture evokes the moment of Enlightenment. The face is highly stylized, with almond-shaped almost closed eyes, a straight nose and a discreet mouth. The elongated ears are clearly visible and stand out from the head. The coiffure is simplified and surmounted by a tiered conical top crest, typical of popular and votive Lao representations.
The treatment of the body is deliberately sober and geometric. The shoulders are broad, the arms massive, and the drapery is summarized by a few engraved lines. This simplification of volumes, associated with a strongly frontal stance, gives the sculpture an almost archaic character.
Condition:
The surface preserves significant remnants of gilding on a red and dark brown background. Traces of black and red lacquer on the base are also visible, heavily worn, which testify to long use in a domestic or devotional context. The wear, small chips and rubbing reinforce the folk charm and authentic character of this statuette. Small crack on the tip of the flame.
