Description from the seller

Rare small Kindjal with ceremonial status in nielloed silver and damascened work - Caucasus, 20th century

Description

Exceptional small dagger of the Kindjal type (or Qama), a true masterpiece of Caucasian metalworking from the second half of the 20th century. This 20 cm model, known as “gilet” or ceremonial, testifies to the high social rank of its former owner.

Details and features:

Scabbard and grip: Entirely crafted in solid silver (not stamped, tested) with an extraordinarily fine niello decoration. The floral scrolls and lobed foliage motif covers the entire surfaces, creating a velvety contrast typical of master artisans from Kubachi (Dagestan) or Tiflis (Tbilisi), Georgia.

Blade: Double-edged steel blade, adorned with a silver-damascened cartouche (Koftgari technique). The calligraphic inscription begins with the term "Amal" (عمل) meaning "Work of", a classic signature of the great master armorer s of the era.

Construction: The scabbard carries its original wooden core (visible at the throat), ensuring optimal protection of the blade and confirming authentic artisanal manufacture.

Condition: Superb condition for an object of this age. The niello is nicely black and complete, the silver shows a beautiful period patina. No major issues to report.
