Description from the seller
Wooden triptych with scenes of the Nativity and the Annunciation - Flemish Style
General Description
Magnificent portable altar triptych made in polychromed wood. The piece presents a classical Marian devotion iconography, characteristic of Nordic Renaissance art. Objects of this type were common for private use in domestic oratories or by noble travelers.
Iconographic Analysis
Central Panel: Represents the "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" or a "Virgin of the Milk" (Virgo Lactans). The Virgin Mary is seen nursing the Child Jesus in a rocky landscape with detailed vegetation, a common symbolism of Christ's human nature.
Left Panel: Depicts the Virgin Mary in a posture of prayer or reception, probably part of the Annunciation scene or a donor/saint figure.
Right Panel: Represents Archangel Gabriel (identifiable by the wings and robe), completing the Annunciation cycle.
Technical Details
Material: Wood (possibly oak or walnut, typical of the Flemish/Germanic region).
Frame: Golden wooden frame with traces of old patina and functional hinges that allow the wings to close.
Technique: High-definition printing on panel (transfer or adhered sheet).
Condition: Good overall condition for its age. Shows natural signs of aging in the wood, small cracks in the polychromy, and wear on the gilding of the frame, which adds authenticity and character to the piece.
