Description from the seller
This large-format poster is an advertising piece from the era promoting the Compagnie des Grands Express Aériens, one of the early French airlines. The work is a classic example of graphic design from the early 20th century, aimed at conveying a sense of modernity and luxury. The poster’s graphics are signed by Dick.
The protagonist is a blue biplane, identified in the text as a Farman "Goliath", flying over a busy commercial harbor. The aircraft is depicted in flight above a calm sea, symbolizing the superiority of air travel over traditional transport methods.
Below the plane, the scene bustles with activity: we see steamships, steam locomotives, and trucks at a wharf. This contrast serves to emphasize the speed and efficiency of the new air travel compared with land and sea transportation.
In the bottom left, a photographic inset shows the cabin interior. It is interesting to note the wicker chairs, which at the time represented the pinnacle of light comfort for passengers.
The elegant, sweeping cursive text dominates the upper portion on a background that fades from red to yellow, evoking a radiant sunset or dawn. The text specifies the Paris-London route and provides the reservations office address on Rue d’Anjou in Paris.
