Description from the seller
Japan's Satsuma box – ca. 1870
A refined porcelain Satsuma box from Japan, dating to around 1870, from the early Meiji period. The box is executed in the characteristic crackle glaze and richly decorated with polychrome painting and gold accents, typical for Satsuma work from this period.
The decoration consists of finely worked figures, floral motifs and ornaments, carefully applied with great precision. The combination of soft colors and gold gives the object an elegant and luxurious appearance. Such boxes were used for storing small valuables, but also served as decorative objects within both Japanese and European interiors.
Satsuma earthenware became highly popular on the international market in the late 19th century, partly due to exports to Europe, where the refinement and exotic appearance were greatly appreciated. This box is a fine example: compact, yet rich in detail and presence.
