He was born in Salerno to Ermenegildo and Francesca San Martino. His father, a set designer and theatrical decorator, steered him toward an artistic career. He studied at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts, where he attended the drawing school of Stanislao Lista and the painting school of Domenico Morelli. He also studied at the studio of fellow townsman Gaetano Esposito. When in 1897, at the Third Triennial Exposition of Milan, and at the Promotrice “Salvator Rosa” of Naples, his works were not appreciated, he decided to move to Paris, where he established himself and produced works that appeared with success in the era’s most important exhibitions. He received recognitions and official assignments, such as a mission to Morocco in 1914, commissioned by the French government. He lived in Paris until his death in 1948.
