Biblia, Dat is, de gantsche Heylige Schrifture, published in 1663 by Tot Leyden, By de Weduwe ende Erffgenamen van Johan. Elzevier in Dutch, leather binding, folio, 712 pages, with a map by N. Visscher, in reasonably good condition.
Description from the seller
Bible, that is, the entire Holy Scripture, containing all the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments. By order of the High-Mighty States General of the United Netherlands, and according to the Decree of the National Synod, held at Dordrecht, in the years 1618 and 1619. Faithfully translated from the original languages into our Dutch tongue. With newly added explanations on the more difficult passages, notes on the parallel texts, and new registers on both Testaments. And by common order of the Dutch churches corrected from printing faults and misstatements found in the previous prints. In Leiden, by the widow and heirs of Johan. Elzevier, booksellers of the Academy. With Privilege. Also obtainable in Amsterdam, by Louys and Daniel Elzevier, together with Abraham vander Burgh. 1663. Folio. (46)468(28)167(4)77 fol.
A truly characteristic pulpit Bible. When the Bible lies open in the middle, there are on the left and right under torn corners where the preacher’s hands were often resting. The block is very bright for an Elzevier; often they are quite brown. Only in the middle are a few pages somewhat light-browned. In the middle several pages have their bottom corner ragged, see photos, this gives a used appearance to this Bible. I have seen one page with a little text loss in the marginal notes, see photo. The last two pages have been restored. There is one map included, this is by N. Visscher, the condition of the map is clearly visible in the photos. The edge has been restored. This map is included because it contains many beautiful details and also depicts the land of Israel where most Biblical histories have taken place.
The plates are original and the leather on the boards as well. Although the leather is damaged, it still has a nice old appearance. The spine has been renewed in old style, so you need not fear that when you turn the Bible the spine will break.
The Elzevier firm were the academy printers of Leiden. They printed nearly all the academic teaching material and the many theses. Now they have also undertaken to print the Bible entirely in Roman type. In the Privilege it says that they obtained the exclusive right for 20 years to print the Bible in this type. So everyone could now print the Bible with permission of the city authorities, but only Elzevier could print the Bible entirely in Roman type until 1683.
• Elzevier 1663 is completely printed in Roman type, thus easily readable
• New spine provides much sturdiness, you need not fear using and perusing the Bible
• MAP of the Promised Land. By N. Visscher.
