Description from the seller
Oak chest in wood, Gothic style, 18th century – North of Castile
Exquisite chest made of oak wood, carved in Gothic style with hinges and rivets in forged iron. This chest presents an elongated rectangular body in which the front panel has carved ornamentation in the form of fenestration, geometric and vegetal design, Gothic in style. It is configured with two windows with Gothic arches on each side, and a small rose window with a flower in the central area, beneath the lock. The lid, the sides and the bottom have no carved decorations. This top lid opens thanks to its original iron hinges. The interior offers a large storage space, historically used to store clothing and blankets. The solid, robust coffer shows a beautiful aging across the wood, a good patina.
The chest is a typology typical of the Middle Ages and the most common until the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It was not only used to store clothing and domestic utensils, but also as a seat, table and bed depending on its dimensions. The chest could be made of carved wood with motifs taken from Gothic architecture, or of tooled leather and iron pierced and chiselled in reinforcements, corners and locks. In the 17th century in Castile, walnut chests are very common in the Valladolid area, and when they are made further north they are of chestnut or oak.
Dimensions: 47 x 104 x 34 cm.
The shipment of the product will be paid by the buyer according to the dimensions, weight and destination. The shipping costs include professional, custom-made packaging; and the personalized shipping, with tracking number and warranty.
