Robert Capa (1913–1954) - Berin Kurfürstendamm, 1945

Robert Capa on Kurfürstendamm: The world-famous war photographer Robert Capa documented the devastated city of Berlin in the summer of 1945 in over 500 largely unknown photographs. Many of his iconic images were taken on and around Kurfürstendamm, where he captured everyday life amidst the ruins and the beginnings of reconstruction. Robert Capa (1913-1954) is one of the greatest war photographers of the 20th century: His images have shaped our visual memory. Largely unknown are the more than 500 photographs that Robert Capa took in Berlin in the summer of 1945, wearing a US Army uniform: A glimpse of the liberated, destroyed city and its people, of Allied soldiers, Berliners, and again and again, of children. The career of the Hungarian-Jewish refugee had begun in Berlin in 1931. The days of summer 1945 marked a turning point in both his career and his life. To mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation from National Socialism, Robert Capa's Berlin collection will be on display at Centrum Judaicum for the first time in an exhibition, in cooperation with the Robert Capa Archive of the International Center of Photography, New York.
