Description from the seller
Larger bust “Bacchante” by Jef Lambeaux, patinated plaster. Height about 43 cm
Description
Beautiful larger bust “Bacchante” in patinated plaster by Jef Lambeaux (1852-1908), one of the best-known Belgian sculptors of the second half of the 19th century, known for, among other things, the Brabo Fountain on the Grote Markt in Antwerp and the relief 'The Human Passions' in Brussels.
This sculpture is representative of Lambeaux’s oeuvre both in theme and style. He was famous for his portrayal of passion and joie de vivre. Movement and graceful, flowing lines are also central in his work. Both aspects are found in this bust; it depicts a smiling woman and is all about movement.
The work is signed in plaster. This piece was produced in an edition; several copies are known, but the patination varies each time. The young woman who served as the model for this sculpture also modeled for almost all of his female busts... it was claimed that this woman was his mistress... a risqué detail.
