This powerful work by the German artist A.R. Penck (1939–2017) is an outstanding example of his characteristic visual language. The serigraphy “Für Bitterfeld” was created in 1990 and reflects Penck's engagement with political and social issues.

A.R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler in Dresden, was a self-taught artist who stood out for his unmistakable visual language. His works, often characterized by stick figures, symbols and signs, recall cave paintings, Asian calligraphy and graffiti. With his “Standart” painting, he aimed for universal comprehensibility of his art that should communicate across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Penck was repeatedly represented at Documenta and his works are in major museums worldwide, including the MoMA in New York and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.
