Two-volume Dutch Bible: Bybel: Dat is, de gansche H. Schrift, published in 1748 by Nicolaas Goetzee, bound in leather with gilt tooling, folio size (approximately 43.5 x 29 cm), 800 pages, in Dutch.
Description from the seller
Bible: That is, the whole Holy Scripture, containing all the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments. By order of the High and Mighty States General… By common order of the Dutch Churches corrected for the printing faults and misstatements found in the first edition. Gorinchem, N. Goetzee, MDCCXLVIII (1748). Folio. 2 volumes.
Original leather with ribbands and gold stamping on the spine and the boards. The bindings are neatly restored in style. The boards of the New Testament have some leather damage, see the last photo. They are beautiful bindings that are well stamped.
The text blocks are sturdy and neat. Although especially in the New Testament a number of brown text pages appear due to iron gall ink, they are fine text blocks, see the photos. The flyleaf bears a few wax seal stains. From the title page in part 1 there is a small tear that has been repaired.
Through this Bible runs the engravings series of Pieter de Hondt. No fewer than 212 folio-sized engravings. These are on better quality paper and clear in texture. This series was produced between 1715 and 1720. The first initiative for this engraving series came from Mr. Van der Marck (and François Halma). He employed the services of various designers, painters and engravers to bring this enterprise to fruition. The first 133 engravings were drawn by Hoet and Houbraken. 79 engravings are by Picart. Since sales initially progressed a bit slowly, Van der Marck engaged Pieter de Hondt of The Hague for further sales. Thus Pieter de Hondt is now listed on the title page of 1728. The text under the engravings was prepared by Jacques Saurin, pastor in The Hague. He came from France and studied there in Geneva.
The contract between Van der Marck and Picart has been preserved and can also be found in W.C. Poortman, Bible en Prent, part IIa p. 139/140.
In the Old Testament there are 136 engravings, of which 13 are double folio in size. In addition there is also the title engraving. One engraving has a small tear. The others are all in good condition.
The New Testament contains 75 engravings, of which 13 are in double folio format. In addition there is a title engraving. In one large engraving there is a tear.
Poortman mentions 212 engravings; I do not know whether he counts the title page of the New Testament among them. I count 136 + 75 equals 211 engravings. And 2 x a title engraving.
There are 12 maps in this edition. The maps that belong with the Goetzee Bibles. These maps are in good condition. In one there is a small tear.
It is a neat and beautiful set of this Gorinchem edition.
