The balangandan penca is a traditional Afro-Brazilian amulet, originating from Bahia, created by African slaves. It consists of a base with birds, from which hang various amulets (amulets): Figa (fist): Protects against envy and the evil eye, fruits (pomegranate, melon): Fertility, longevity and abundance, each amulet has a different meaning. This penca features 9 different amulets.
Use: Enslaved women wore it at the waist. It was also hung on the doors of houses to protect against evil spirits and to welcome guests.
