Two iron wall sconces in the Neogothic style dating to the first half of the 20th century, 30 cm wide, 33 cm high and 18 cm deep, origin Spain, in good used condition and in working order.
Description from the seller
These two iron wall sconces, dateable to the first half of the twentieth century, faithfully reinterpret the severe and ornamental language of the Gothic Revival, a style that recovers verticality, structural strength, and medieval aesthetics from a fully modern sensibility. Each piece is organized around a straight central axis, from which curved arms emerge with a firm and restrained movement, as if they were extensions of an imaginary architecture. The iron, worked with a slightly rough texture and darkened by time, lends the sconces a solid, almost architectural presence, very much in line with the spirit of the style.
The volutes and curves that articulate the arms recall the hardware of Gothic temples and gates, where ornamentation arises from the structure itself without losing functionality. The cups intended to hold the candles maintain that same decorative sobriety, with simple profiles that reinforce the verticality of the whole. The design, though austere, possesses a resounding elegance: it does not seek excess, but the expressive strength of hand-forged iron, with small irregularities that betray the blacksmith’s craft.
The ensemble conveys an almost liturgical character, typical of historicist interiors from the early twentieth century, where candlelight was conceived as part of the space’s spiritual atmosphere. They are pieces that combine robustness, tradition, and a very defined decorative sense, capable of imparting a medieval and sober accent to any environment.
