Description from the seller

Thanks for visiting.

This is a Yamanaka lacquerware mirror by Gahou.
Set of two mirrors and a stand.

Gahou is known as the creator of the traditional lacquerware craft of “matched mirrors.
These matching mirrors are a set of a hand mirror and a stand mirror, and are characterized by beautiful floral designs and gold leaf work. The retro Showa-era design also makes them popular as gifts for people from other countries.

Yamanaka-nuri is a type of lacquerware produced in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and is also called Yamanaka lacquerware.
Yamanaka is known as “Yamanaka of the Wood” along with “Wajima of the Lacquer” and “Kanazawa of the Maki-e” as one of the three major lacquerware production areas in the prefecture. Yamanaka has long been home to a large number of kijiji-shi (wood craftsmen)* and boasts the nation's largest production of hikimono (ground) wood.

One of the main characteristics of Yamanaka lacquerware, which makes the most of grain patterns and expresses natural textures, is the tatekidori (vertical cutting) method, in which the shape of the vessel is taken in the direction in which the wood grows. This process produces robust lacquerware that is resistant to distortion due to drying and allows for elaborate finishing not only of bowls, but also of thinly ground pieces and lids. Furthermore, the decorative “tatekidori ”* process, in which various patterns are applied to the wood, such as sen-suji and ara-suji, has produced Yamanaka-nuri's unique lacquerware with meticulous attention to detail.

It has been stored in a mostly unused condition and is in beautiful condition.
However, since this is a very old item, please buy on the assumption that it has age-appropriate signs of use due to age and storage.
Please check the photos for details.

The size is measured by hand.
Therefore, there may be slight errors.
