Brooch Carbon - Victorian Whitby Jet

Superb Victorian mourning brooch, deeply carved with floral and fruit motifs, made of Whitby Jet, a fossilised wood found in North Yorkshire that was the "gold standard" for 19th-century mourning jewellery. Museum quality. Victorians used "floriography"—a secret language of flowers—to convey messages through their jewellery. The motifs on this brooch likely hold specific meanings related to grief and remembrance: Flowers (likely Roses): A full bloom can represent a life lived to its fullest, while roses in general often symbolized the special love of God or a deep personal connection. Grapes/Vine Motif: Grapes were frequently used in Victorian mourning pieces to symbolize Christ or the promise of a heavenly afterlife. Leaves (likely Ivy or Oak): Ivy represented fidelity and eternal life, while oak leaves symbolized strength and endurance Measurements: Length approximately 6 centimetres Weight 16.60 grams All measurements are approximate. Photographs are part of the description. Many of my items are vintage and are therefore likely to show some age-related wear. This can include things such as: missing stones scratches, discolouration etc. Please be sure to look through each photograph carefully and read the description fully, to get an idea of condition. Import charges are the responsibility of the buyer!
