Antique Handle - Early to mid 20th century (circa 1900–1950)

Persian Carved Bone Dagger Handle with Figural Narrative Scenes & Red Glass Inlay A finely carved Persian dagger handle of tapering cylindrical form, executed in bone and richly decorated with detailed narrative figural scenes on both sides. One side depicts a dynamic combat scene between two figures: a mustached warrior equipped with a helmet, shield, and sword facing a younger opponent, also armed with shield and blade. The composition captures a moment of confrontation, rendered with expressive gestures and traditional attire. The opposite side presents a scene related to traditional Persian Zurkhaneh practice, showing two mustached men engaged in ritual athletic activity. Each figure holds large traditional wooden clubs (“mil”), associated with classical Persian physical training, while additional elements are placed near their feet, reinforcing the physical and ceremonial context of the scene. Both sides are further framed by engraved Persian inscriptions along the upper and lower sections, forming part of the overall decorative and narrative composition. The surface is enhanced with bands of inset red glass cabochons encircling the upper and lower sections, creating a vivid contrast with the natural creamy tone of the bone. The piece demonstrates careful hand craftsmanship, combining narrative figural carving with ornamental detail in a balanced and visually engaging composition. Provenance: Private collection of a distinguished gentleman, West London. Condition: Good overall condition with visible signs of age, including surface wear, minor cracks, and natural patina consistent with organic material. Please note: The photographs form an integral part of the description and condition report. Dimensions are visible in the final images.
