Donatello's David is a bronze statue from c. 1440, created by the Italian Renaissance sculptor Donatello.
It was the first freestanding male nude since antiquity and caused a sensation when it was unveiled.
The statue depicts the Biblical King David with his foot on the head of the beheaded giant Goliath. The androgynous, almost feminine young man with a mysterious smile is entirely naked, except for his boots and a hat adorned with a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory. In his hand he holds Goliath's sword.
