Description from the seller
Old Copper Enamelled Bowl with Calligraphy Decoration and Floral Medallions
Middle East, Qajar period, 19th century
Elegant truncated-cone bowl in solid red copper, entirely hand-chiseled and formerly enameled. This type of piece, characteristic of Qajar-era dinanderie, traditionally served as an ablution bowl or as a prestigious domestic vessel.
The decoration is arranged in a wide horizontal frieze divided into several polylobed cartouches housing calligraphy in Nasta'liq style, probably poetic verses or wishes of prosperity for its owner.
Alternating circular medallions finely chased depicting roses and stylized eglantines, motifs emblematic of Persian garden art. A border of dotted punctuations surmounts a row of incised lambrequins (pendants), emphasizing the base of the design.
The object shows a beautiful patina of use. The original enameling has partially disappeared, allowing the warmth of the red copper to show on the body, creating a visually very aesthetic contrast with the engraving's recessed areas still grayish.
