Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Beautiful and elegant bronze statue depicting Shakyamuni Buddha seated in vajrasana, right hand in bhumisparsha mudra, touching the earth as witness, the right resting on the heel, wearing the samghati, serene and gentle expression, eyes half-closed in almond shape, elongated lobes, in meditation.
The youthful expression of the face gives this type of Buddha the nickname "baby face." It is also notable for the tilted position of the base, which is rare. The "ball" held in his left hand is the stylized representation of the Vitarka Mudra and symbolizes the transmission of teaching.
The back of the base bears traces of old scratches corresponding to the fact that when a monastery sold a statue, religious writings were often erased.
Height: 26.2 cm. Width: 12.6 cm. Depth: 8.9 cm. Weight: 1647 g
Burma, late 18th century, early 19th century, from my personal collection.
CONDITION
The statue is in reasonable condition, bearing its age and oxidation marks. See photos.
THE SELLER
I have been traveling Asia for 30 years and more particularly Burma (Myanmar), where I have built numerous contacts with traders, which has enabled me to buy ancient objects, and continues to enable me to do so; I also buy on the European market depending on opportunities. Jean Dumoulin.
It will be packed with the utmost care, insured and trackable shipment."
