The artist MARA is known for her vibrant visual language and cosmopolitan motifs.
Purchased in a Cologne gallery.
Margit Schmitt-Leibinger, the Erlangen-based artist who became internationally known as "MARA!" for her cheerful paintings, died at the age of 60. Trained in the 1970s at the Nuremberg Academy, she composed her works from bright colors, imaginative signs and symbols, allowing them to speak with a particularly joyful language. In 1986 she received Erlangen’s Cultural Promotion Prize. With exhibitions in metropolises such as Tokyo, New York, Singapore, Osaka, and Paris, and represented in major galleries around the world, she became one of the city’s most renowned artistic ambassadors from her studio on Spardorfer Straße. Her diverse body of work encompassed large-scale paintings as well as sculptures and spatial installations, as well as jewelry and porcelain design.
