Impressive original bronze ship plaque of the American torpedo-boat destroyer USS Cowell (DD-547), belonging to the famous Fletcher-class destroyer fleet.
This heavy and authentic plaque notes the ship's rich wartime history, including operations in the Pacific during World War II. The campaigns mentioned include, among others, the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, New Guinea, Truk and Okinawa. It also lists the prestigious Presidential Unit Citation for the period April–June 1945.
The USS Cowell was commissioned in 1943 and played an active role in the fight against Japan. This type of plaque was used as official ship or commemorative objects and are today rare and highly sought after by collectors of maritime and military memorabilia.
The reverse side (see photo) shows clear signs of age and wear, which underscores authenticity and historical value.
