Biography
Franz Erhard Walther (born 1939 in Fulda) is a German artist and one of the most internationally influential representatives of conceptual and participatory art. He lives and works in Germany. Since the 1960s, Walther has developed a radically expanded understanding of art, in which body, action, time, and space gain central significance.
Internationally, Walther became known through his “works sets” – textile objects and fabric elements that only become artworks through the active participation of the viewers. His works push the boundaries between sculpture and performance and place the process of action above the static object. In doing so, Walther is considered a pioneer of an art that redefines the relationship between work, artist, and audience.
Franz Erhard Walther has participated in major international exhibitions, including repeatedly at the documenta, and has been awarded prestigious prizes, among them the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale. His works are in leading museums and private collections worldwide and have sustainably influenced the development of conceptual, performative, and relational art.
