Description from the seller
Anthropomorphic Vase Cosanga-Panzaleo
Incised Decor - Panzaleo Culture (Ecuador)
Integration Period (c. 500 – 1500 AD)
18 cm x 16.5 cm
Very good overall condition. Natural surface wear, earthy concretions of origin. No apparent restoration.
This piece comes from the central highlands of Ecuador (Cotopaxi and Tungurahua provinces).
Globular vessel with a wide mouth, flanked by two sturdy and elegant ribbon handles. The neck and shoulder are adorned with applied discoid appendages (protuberances) forming a stylized face or bodily attributes, an emblematic feature of this culture. Complex incision work presenting geometric chevron and zigzag motifs, delimiting dotted areas. The contrast between the red engobe at the base and the upper part's light color highlights the dynamism of the composition.
The Panzaleo pottery were prestige items highly valued in pre-Hispanic Ecuador. Because of their lightness and refined aesthetics, they were the subject of intensive exchange networks between the Sierra and the Amazon. This piece testifies to the technical mastery of Andean artisans before the Incas arrived in the region.
Piece submitted to expert and auction cataloged, a duplicate of the invoice certifying its authenticity will be included with the package
