Description from the seller
The Hollandsche Spectator - Justus van Effen - Amsterdam, K van Tongerlo, 1756 half-leather bindings
Good. Planing and impact marks. Inside pages discolored, some pages browned, here and there a spot, a hole in three sheets. Slight spine wear. Stamp on the first flyleaf and on the last page of both parts. Scribble on the title pages.
Gray spot visible on several photos on the right in the middle — this is not on the paper but lens damage.
This third part (the first and second pieces) contains the reprint of the originally fifth and sixth parts.
Van Effen is known for his edition of the Hollandsche Spectator, which appeared from August 1731 to April 1735. Although he had a few regular collaborators, most pieces were written by Van Effen himself. He comments on the Dutch spirit, thrift, the obsession with cleanliness, excessive eating and drinking habits, and provincialism. His style is rationalizing, sober. The famous novella by Van Effen, Kobus and Agnietje, appears in 1733 for the first time in the periodical.
