Two-volume first French edition of Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, illustrated by Gavarni and Tony Joannot, published 1846–1849 by Au bureau de l'echo des Feuilletons in Paris, bound in half-leather with gold, in very good condition and with 978 pages, 26 cm by 18 cm.
Description from the seller
Mythical edition: it is the coveted first French edition illustrated by the masters of Romanticism, Gavarni and Tony Joannot. Volume 2 corresponds to the year of completion of the original work (1846), while Volume 1 is an identical reprint from 1849 by the same publisher and with the same covers.
Elegant period binding in half-leather (leather) with a smooth spine and gilt decoration, preserved in very good condition. The covers retain their firmness and structure. The illustrations contain the famous wood engravings and steel engravings. See the photographs.
Condition: very good for copies 180 years old. It shows rust spots (foxing) typical of paper from the era that do not interfere with reading or the beauty of the illustrations.
Provenance and history: Both volumes, with nineteenth-century French handwriting, have the names of the owners in pencil on the first page of the book: one reads Jacqueline et Denisse and the other Jacqueline Maithy. This guarantees that the set has been kept in private hands since the mid-19th century.
