Description from the seller
Important Baroque Frame in Paper-Hovered Carving with Refined River View of the 18th Century
I. THE FRAME: A Masterpiece of Carving
The true strength of this piece lies in the superb papier-mache (cartoccio) carved and gilded wooden frame, typical of the high-quality craftsmanship of the full eighteenth century.
Design: Characterized by an openwork treatment with fluid volutes, shell motifs, and acanthus leaves that seem to move around the painting. The corners are richly accented with protruding moldings that give it three-dimensionality and prestige.
Gilding: The gold leaf gilding presents a magnificent antique patina; the contrast between shiny (burnished) parts and matte ones creates a play of light that instantly brightens any room.
Internal Detail: The inner profile is finished with a "torchon" (cord) motif that frames the work like a jewel, clearly separating the exuberance of the Baroque carving from the serenity of the landscape.
II. THE PAINTING: Atmospheres of the Grand Tour
Protected by this magnificent structure, there is a precious oil miniature, a masterful example of eighteenth-century vedutismo (view painting).
Subject: An Arcadian scene depicting a river landscape. On the right, a striking waterfall descends among rocks, while in the background a fortified citadel with classical lines rises, bathed in a misty and golden atmosphere.
Style and Technique: The brushwork is meticulous, typical of the Italian school influenced by the masters of the ideal landscape. The "macchiette" (small human figures) in the foreground add narration and depth to the composition.
Atmosphere: The warm, soft light suggests the sunset hour, evoking that sense of nostalgia and wonder that European travelers sought during their journey in Italy.
External dimensions: 17x19x4 cm; internal: 8x7 cm
This object is not just a painting but a high-class furnishing accessory. The perfect harmony between the sculptural power of the frame and the painting’s delicacy makes it a rare piece, ideal to be inserted in a quadreria (gallery) or as a single element above an antique cabinet.
