You are bidding on an old french 4/4 violin probably from Francois Caussin workshop, labeled "Nicolaus Gagliano filius Alexandri fecit Neap. 1820".
Condition:
Some tears and wears to deep brown varnish over lighter ground, no cracks.
Description:
Good quality straight high grained spruce was chosen for the top. Two pieces back of beautiful softly flamed maple. Matched sides, neck and scroll. Old good ebony and rosewood set up, maser made bridge by R&M Millant a Paris, new strings, the violin is ready to play. The whole length of the violin is 588 mm and the back 359 mm. The width of the upper bouts: 164 mm; middle bouts: 113 mm; lower bouts: 200 mm. Full size.
