Detailed Description:
A classic and vibrant piece of Mexican decorative art, perfect for those looking to add an exotic, historical touch to their interiors or "Wunderkammer" collections.
This spectacular "Piedra del Sol" (Aztec Sun Stone / Maya Calendar) wall relief dates back to the 1970s-80s and is a prime example of the high-quality vintage souvenirs from that era. The central piece features the striking face of the sun god Tonatiuh, surrounded by intricate rings of astronomical and calendar glyphs.
The relief is cast from a premium mixture of crushed malachite stone powder and resin, giving it a rich, antique green patina that mimics oxidized bronze or solid malachite.
The artwork is set against a deep, vibrant red fabric background, creating a powerful visual contrast that highlights the complex details of the green relief. It is housed in a high-quality, solid octagonal wooden frame, which features an additional inner border cast in the same malachite-style resin.
This piece is not just a decoration but a conversation starter that captures the mystical essence of ancient Mesoamerican culture.
Condition Report:
Front: In excellent vintage condition. The malachite relief is intact, with no chips or cracks. The red fabric background remains bright and well-preserved.
Back & Frame: Unlike many examples from this period, the rear plywood backing of this piece is entirely solid and structurally intact, with no breaks or missing pieces.
There are some minor white cosmetic smudges (likely plaster or paint marks from a previous wall mounting) on the reverse, which are completely invisible when the piece is hung.
The original "Made in Mexico" silver label and the metal wire for hanging are perfectly preserved on the back.
