Description from the seller
Ioannes Chrysostomus:
Quartus tomus operum Divi Ioannes Chrysostomus, archiepiscopi Constantinopolitani,
1570, Paris.
This fourth volume of the Latin complete edition of the works of Saint John Chrysostom contains above all the exposition of the letters of the Apostle Paul and belongs to the most influential patristic biblical commentaries of the Early Modern period. The edition follows the humanist tradition of the Parisian printing centers of the 16th century and is based on Greek manuscripts that were rendered into learned Latin by the most prominent philologists of their time.
The volume documents the theological reception of the Church Father in the era of the Counter-Reformation and at the same time shows the effort to secure the text critically and to organize systematically the extensive homiletic and exegetical work. In addition to the detailed homilies and commentaries there are editor’s prefaces and marginalia that reveal use in academic instruction as well as in preaching practice. The work is thus a central source for the history of Pauline exegesis, the patristic tradition, and the confessional scholarly culture of the 16th century.
40x26cm. Previously restored full-leather binding, somewhat rubbed, otherwise in good condition. Spine and cover gilded; 841 pages, with the two-column text continuously numbered per column up to no. 1682. Defect at the top of the title. Numerous notes in the margin in ink of an old hand. Internally only very slightly browned for the age. Solid block. Numerous watermarks.
