Original official Russian silver belt buckle with nielloed decoration and a dagger-style closure, dating to the early 20th century, measuring 8.5 × 7 × 0.2 cm and weighing 22 g.
Description from the seller
Ancient Russian buckle in niellé silver with a safety dagger – early 20th century
Beautiful and rare Russian belt buckle in niellé silver, probably made in the Caucasus / Dagestan area, dating to the early 20th century
The piece consists of two interlocking shaped plates, finely hand-decorated over the entire surface with a rich pattern of vegetative scrolls and incised geometric motifs filled in niello, typical of the finest Caucasian and Russian production of the period.
A particularly charming feature is the small ornamental dagger with a security chain, also niello-decorated, which serves as the central hinge closure by inserting into its square recess. This refined locking system is typical of traditional ceremonial Caucasian belt buckles, often paired with fine men’s or women’s costumes.
The back retains the original belt guides and bears the “84” mark, indicating the silver fineness used in the Russian Empire (approximately 875/1000), as well as other control marks and probably a master’s mark.
The quality of the engraving, the excellent contrast of the niello, and the beautiful age patina make this piece highly decorative and collectible.
Excellent condition, with slight signs consistent with age.
Dimensions: 8.5 x 7 x 0.2 cm. Weight: 22 g
Locking mechanism complete and functioning.
