A pair of Baroque rosettes hand-carved from Linden wood with plaster and original gold leaf gilding, dating to about 1730–1740 from southern Germany, each 11 cm square and 3 cm deep, in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Pair of two splendid Baroque rosettes – church carving from around 1730/1740 – gold leaf
This exquisite pair of hand-carved wooden appliques dates from the High Baroque period, precisely dated to the years 1730 to 1740. The pieces originally came from an old church (presumably part of the ornamentation of an altar or a choir stall).
The circular ornaments exhibit masterful carving with deeply relief-engraved foliate volutes surrounding a central bloom. What makes these objects particularly valuable is the original polychrome gilding. Over the centuries, the gold leaf along the edges has been slightly rubbed, so the characteristic red polish (the base tone) comes to light – a hallmark of genuine antique gilding from this era.
An uncommon ensemble of 18th-century sacred sculpture in authentic preserved condition.
