openworked (pierced) relief with a dragon and phoenix – a classic Chinese combination that symbolises imperial power (dragon) and harmony/fortune (phoenix).
Technique: hand-cast with subsequently updated chiselling; the underside shows typical casting and oxidation traces.

This set of bookends is typical of Chinese export decor from the early 20th century. They were often sold in Europe and the US as luxury desk/office accessories and are recognisable by their rich symbolism and the heavy solid bronze/brass.
