Description from the seller
Servatius Gallæus's Dissertationes de Sibyllis, earumque oraculis. cum figuris aeneis. Amsterdam: apud Henricum & viduam Theodori Boom, 1688. Pp. (16), 658, (26); cm. 22 x 17. One of the most important and beautiful books on the Sibyls, mythical seers who foretold dark enchantments, and on their oracles: a rare and curious work in its original edition. Text in Latin and in Greek. The author is the Dutch Protestant philologist of great erudition Gervais Gallé (Servatius Galaeus: 1627 - 1709). Good copy, well preserved; bindings not contemporary, in full greenish leather. Initials and frontispieces. On the back board, a fine ex-libris label. Some light, natural foxing, but the paper intact, wide margins. The iconography is important: there are 14 splendid copperplate engravings to which are added a frontispiece allegorical plate and a folded portrait of the author dated 1686 and signed “Romeyn de Hooghe” (1645 – 1708), one of the leading artists of the period. Of the plates, 12 depict the Sibyls: Sibylla Persica, Sibylla Libyssa, Sibylla Delphica, Sibylla Cumaea, Sibylla Erythraea, Sibylla Samia, Sibylla Cumana, Sibylla Hellespontica, Sibylla Phrygia, Sibylla Tiburtina, Sibylla Europaea, and Sibylla Eagyptia; the other two show a temple and the cult of the god Hercules Magasanus. Three illustrations of coins.
