A polychromed wooden Baroque column from Spain, circa 1700, 151.5 × 18 × 17 cm, about 18 kg, in good condition with slight wear.
Description from the seller
This colossal composite column, part of a Spanish Baroque altarpiece in its transition to the more exuberant Rococo style, rises like a whirlwind of gold and polychromy that defies gravity and emptiness. Far from continental sobriety, this piece is an explosion of sacred maximalism, where the shaft twists in endless spirals teeming with drapery, cherub heads, pilasters, and acanthus foliage that seems to throb with a life of its own beneath the burnished gold leaf.
Its iconographic program is a mystical bacchanal presided over by cherub heads with rosy complexions and flowing hair that emerge from among the moldings, their celestial gaze guarding the magnificence of the altar. The capitals, of a delirious composite order, support entablatures where draperies and curtains carved in wood simulate silk fabrics and brocades, falling with a theatrical heaviness that envelops the structure in an aura of divine glory. Every inch of the surface is inhabited by lush vegetation and asymmetrical rhythms that capture the light in a thousand facets, transforming the column into a cosmic axis that connects the earthly with the infinite through the blinding brilliance and overflowing fantasy of colonial and peninsular woodworking.
Provenance: Private collection, Madrid.
Dimensions: 151.5 x 18 x 17 cm
Condition: Good condition, with slight wear and restorations consistent with its age.
Shipping: The piece will be professionally packed and shipped. Please note that the shipping costs indicated are estimates; the final amount may vary depending on market rates and specific packaging requirements for shipping both pieces separately.
