Description from the seller
Elegant Antique Walking Cane in Bamboo and Sterling Silver – Birmingham 1919
Splendid vintage piece that blends the exoticism of natural bamboo with the refined English silverwork craft
This refined walking cane is an authentic collectible dating back to the early twentieth century. The shaft is made of carefully selected bamboo wood, a material highly sought after in the Edwardian era for its unique combination of lightness, flexibility, and natural beauty. The wood knots are well defined and the shaft terminates in a classic ergonomic curved grip.
Finishes in Sterling Silver and Hallmarks
The cane is embellished with solid silver decorations, finely hand-engraved with ornamental volute motifs. On the "vera" (the central collar) are the original British hallmarks that certify authenticity:
The Lion Passant: Symbol of Sterling Silver (purity .925).
The Anchor: Assay Office mark of Birmingham, England.
The Letter "u": Identifies the exact year of production, 1919.
Producer's mark "JH": Attributable to the historic firm Jonathan Howell, one of the most prestigious luxury cane makers of the era.
Details and Condition
Material: Natural bamboo wood and Sterling Silver.
Grip: Curved model with a silver-engraved terminal tip.
Base: Equipped with a black rubber ferrule to protect the wood and ensure a quiet and safe walk (easily removable if you prefer the bare ferrule).
Condition: Excellent. The bamboo is intact and solid, with no cracks. The silver shows a splendid patina and the hand-engraved details are still perfectly crisp.
A piece of great class and distinction, ideal for collectors or as a prestigious antique gift.
